Seattle, WA  60203 Map

Join this final Art Encounter of the Olympic Sculpture Park Residency. Building upon the research and experiences accumulated throughout their residency, collaborating artists Tia Kramer, Eric J. Olson, and Tamin Totzke have choreographed a new participatory performance that playfully critiques ways we interact with technology for their project Orbiting Together (Symphony no. 1). Throughout the performance, participants will receive text messages directing them through a series of movements and imaginary landscapes. Performers embedded in the group will respond to the collective experience, expanding the limits of what feels possible. Please bring your phone and wear clothes to move in. Accommodations will be made for participants without phones. #SAMWinterFree with RSVPvisitsam.org/artencountersOrbiting Together is a participatory project that uses a network of satellites flying over the Olympic Sculpture Park as triggers for text messages, encouraging participants to engage their somatic awareness and mindfulness exercises. Participants who opt in to receiving text messages create a rhizomatic positioning system composed of people in place of technology. To opt in, text "TOGETHER" to "206 IN 01 SKY" (206.460.1759)Photo: Jen Au... Seattle, WA  98107 Map

Folkinception (Trego), The Holy Broke and Navid Eliot perform at Conor Byrne Pub.*UPDATE 2/18/2018:"BIG NEWS: We're changing our name. After seven years playing as Folkinception we've made the decision to continue our musical journey under a new moniker... Trego.Changing a band name is frightening and without a doubt taboo, but we've felt for awhile that the Folkinception name is a misnomer to our evolving sound and vibe. The timing feels right with the evolution of our music and our recent personnel change. Our close friend and longtime fiddle player Heather Montgomery recently stepped away from the band to dedicate more time to other life pursuits. We now welcome Kristen (KB) Black to the band. KB is a talented vocalist and multi-instrumentalist horn player. She brings a fresh, exciting new energy to the music. We're eternally grateful for all the support over the past seven years and we're excited to continue our musical journey under the Trego name.www/tregoband.comwww.facebook.com/tregoband/""Folkinception’s musical roots rise from the great American folk tradition and extend far into the realm of Americana and Rock n Roll. The band has been praised for their ability to “build a song from a whisper to a roar”. The music is firmly rooted in a song writing process that pays homage to life’s triumphs, while confronting adversity with a defiant sense of optimism. Their sound, developed over the past six years, conveys a musical identity unique to their Northwest origins. Folkinception is putting their stamp an a new genre of music coming out of the Pacific Northwest today… Upper Left Americana. Cello, violin, harmonica and vocal harmonies layer together to provide a uniquely original timbre; while electric guitar and Hammond organ vary between nuanced textures and soaring climactic heights. Drums, bass, acoustic guitar and piano round out the instrumentation and act as the driving, rhythmic force behind the songs. Since the band’s inception in 2011 Folkinception has evolved into a regional fan favorite; supporting many of the great up and coming, independent bands touring the Northwest today. Folkinception has shared the stage with Fruition, Hot Buttered Rum, The Lil’ Smokies, Dead Winter Carpenters, Polecat, Hillstomp, Cornmeal and many more."... See MoreSee Less

The Tractor Presents: Ha Ha Tonka w/ The Ramblin' Years at The Sunset

Feb 24, 9:00pm

The Sunset
5433 Ballard Ave NW
Seattle, WA  98107 Map

$ 15.00 / Age 21 And UpAdditional Info:A week into recording their fifth album Heart-Shaped Mountain, Ha Ha Tonka was forced to start over. A massive hardware crash at the studio deleted everything. Following a wave of shock, the band regrouped and refocused, trying different approaches to song structures that they otherwise wouldnt have, and made a resilient album of positivity and triumphant effervescence. After all, music has the power to overcome. At its core, Heart-Shaped Mountain is an album about love and growth. At a time when divisiveness fills the headlines, Ha Ha Tonka is fighting the good fight and building narrative tributes to friends and loved ones, memories past, and prospects of the future. They five-part harmonize on intimate familiarities the nascent stages of relationships, deep and lasting bonds, maturation, fear and loss. This is a call to pause and glance back, inhale inspiration, and forge ahead with renewed purpose. On Heart-Shaped Mountain the quintet expands their creative palette. Once aptly summed as indie-Americana, where Alabama meets Arcade Fire, Ha Ha Tonka unveils balanced, sublime, pop radio-accessible heights and an emotionally broader, post-punk songwriting range, a la early Delta Spirit or a less enigmatic Jnsi. This isnt a betrayal of their discography, though. Rather, Ha Ha Tonka treks to new vistas, crosses uncharted ridges, and unfurls their flag with the confidence and excitement that comes from exploration. In Everything, the intro and choruses are conspicuously optimistic, with a chest-expanding joy tailor-made for the opening credits of any Pixar movie ever made. The verses replete with galloping snare and foggy keyboards mingle landscapes from Tom Pettys earnest heartlands and Jeff Lynnes complex stratospheres. The song delves into vivid-but-dust gathering memories of fond days past (fireworks show on the fourth of July meeting your daughter for the very first time) only to reinforce the guiding mantra of the future (I hope it was everything you thought it would be).Along the journey there are moments of nostalgia and indie rock balladry, like on Race to the Bottom, which brings to mind a Midwestern incarnation of TV on the Radio. All with You brings together HHTs signature acoustic instrumentation with atmospheric synth out of the Phosphorescent handbook. Deeper within theres Southern rock and jangly revelry (Arkansas), and signature, bigger-than-life Tonk (Height of My Fears). Experiences and textures blend together and stack up like the pages of a book. If you take the analogy further, this is their autobiographical magnum opus.Ha Ha Tonka formed in 2004, when four friends from the Ozarks of Missouri started playing music together. They recorded four critically acclaimed albums, played Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, and appeared on Anthony Bourdains No Reservations. Through it all, the individuals made friends, found love, some members got married, some had kids. Especially now, theres a maturity in being able to assess lifes scenery and look toward the future. And theres something altogether more powerful in making others want to feel the same exact way. After all, Heart-Shaped Mountain has the power to overcome.Tickets:www.ticketweb.com/event/the-tractor-presents-ha-ha-tractor-tickets/7921675?REFERRAL_ID=twfb... See MoreSee Less

Climate change is a very real and threatening topic that needs to be continually addressed by the community. We will be welcoming W. Douglas Smith into the shop to present his journey as an environmental scientist and environmental diplomat. He spent thirty-six years working with the Environmental Protection Agency, so Douglas has some brilliant insight into what exactly is going on in our worldwide ecosystem. This presentation will not end in an "all is lost" perspective, but instead prompt us in what we need to do globally, nationally, and personally to avoid irreversible catastrophe. Want to learn why Douglas believes this change will be irreversible? Come out to the presentation and hear for yourself! This event is FREE, the refreshments are FREE, and we hope that your schedule will be FREE.Doors: 7:30Presentation: 7:45W.Douglas Smith's Website: www.planetexperts.com/author/wdsmith/Ascent Outdoors5209 Ballard Ave. NWSeattle, WA 98107206.545.8810... There are those bands who recall an older time and place, a moment in history when music was more about saying something of substance than it was about counting the number of streams. Seattle psych rockers Moon Darling cling to this ideology, creating a bluesy sound that harkens back to that classic ’70s rock howl. By channeling the influence of bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple (with a little bit of weirdness thrown in for good measure), the band builds a kaleidoscopic version of those artists that remains relevant and reverent among all the gaudy imitations littering the modern musical landscape.... $ 10.00 - $12.00 / Age 21 And UpAdditional Info:"Growing up, people would always say I was too happy to be depressed, or too social to have anxiety," says Liza Anne Odachowski, the critically acclaimed songwriter better known these days by her stage name Liza Anne. "In their eyes, because I was one thing, I couldn't also be something else. I think we all exist in duality, though. I can be everything and nothing all at once."Duality is at the core of Liza Anne's arresting new album, 'Fine But Dying,' her debut release for indie powerhouse label Arts & Crafts. Synthesizing the elegant sincerity of Angel Olsen with the wry lyricism of Courtney Barnett and the unapologetic candor of Feist, the music is both tough and vulnerable, bold and withdrawn, a helping hand and a middle finger. Firing on all cylinders with distorted alt-rock guitars and explosive drums one minute, hushed and delicate the next, it's an eclectic collection that reflects the messy complications of growing up in the modern age, as the 23-year-old grapples with the fallout of falling in love, reckons with the patriarchy, and stares down the panic disorder she refuses to let define her. 'Fine But Dying' is the sound of an artist taking total control of her life and her art, a proud misfit crafting an aggressively infectious kiss-off to an industry (and a society) that's tried to box her in from day one.Tickets:www.ticketweb.com/event/the-tractor-presents-liza-anne-tractor-tickets/7859675?REFERRAL_ID=twfb... Seattle, WA  98107 Map

$ 12.00 - $14.00 / Age 21 And UpAdditional Info:"These dreams are more than paper things," sings Matt Quinn on Mt. Joy's infectious folk-rocker "Astrovan," a warm, yearning bit of road-trip philosophy that posits the existence of a Deadhead Jesus cruising the dusty highways of the countryside, nursing a roach on his way to only He knows where. It's an auspicious line from a band predicated on the revival of teenage dreams.Mt. Joy started off as a rekindling of shared musical ambitions between Philadelphia high school friends Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar). Reunited in Los Angeles thanks to the ebbs and flows of adult life, the pair met multi-instrumentalist Michael Byrnes through a Craigslist ad. They named themselves Mt. Joy as an ode to a mountain in Valley Forge National Park near Sam's childhood home, and together, with Byrnes' roommate Caleb Nelson producing, they recorded three songs and sent them out into the world, hoping for the best. "I knew I still wanted to write songs, but the realities of life made that dream seem pretty impossible," Quinn says.Much to the band's amazement, "Astrovan" accomplished the impossible. Without initial promotion or fanfare, the song took off on Spotify, racking up 5 million streams to date. "The irony of 'Astrovan' was that song was really about being stuck in a life and wanting to have the opportunity to pursue a dream, and in an instant it gave us that opportunity. " Quinn says. Mt. Joy quickly transitioned from a part-time calling into a full-fledged band rounded out by Byrnes on bass, Sotiris Eliopoulos on drums and Jackie Miclau on keyboard.Come 2017, Mt. Joy hit the road, and hit it hard: They played tour dates alongside the likes of The Shins, The Head and The Heart, The Lone Bellow, and Whitney, and popped up at some of the summer's biggest festivals, including Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza and Made In America. "We were put on some big shows very quickly," Quinn says. "The growth for us has been exponential - we've really just become a family that's constantly pushing each other and the live show to be great." They eventually caught the attention of Dualtone Records and began work on their debut album.Tickets:www.ticketweb.com/event/the-tractor-presents-mt-joy-tractor-tickets/8080725?REFERRAL_ID=twfb... $ 15.00 / Age 21 And UpAdditional Info:Lomas self-titled debut reveals a band obsessed with songs assound. There are endless details to discover here, stoked by the albums urgent and searching lyrical themes (exquisitely delivered by the translucent voice of Emily Cross); and on headphones, the album feels both intimate and expansive, like casting your eyes over a detailed painting on a vast canvas. Its also the product of a joint pilgrimage around the globe by fellow touring musicians. Jonathan Meiburg is best known as the singer of Shearwater; Cross and the multi-instrumentalist and engineer Dan Duszynski form Cross Record, originally from Chicago. They met through Ben Goldberg (of Badabing! records, who helped launch the careers of Tune-Yards, Beirut, and Sharon Van Etten), who sent Meiburg Cross Records 2015 albumWabi-Sabi, which led to the two bands traveling together across America and Europe throughout Shearwaters 2016 tour forJet Plane and Oxbow, often crammed into the same van. The tour was Cross Records first, but Meiburg was shocked by their maturity and confidence. I couldnt believe all that sound was coming out of two people, he says. They had their own world, their own rules, and they slayed every night. They were mesmerizing. While in the van or at soundchecks, they shared their musical knowledge and love of nature and animals. I think Jonathan is one of the most special people weve ever met, says Cross. Its hard not to like him. He has such a curious mind. And after an especially memorable show in Belgium, Meiburg approached Cross and Duszynski about working together. I fell in love with their music, he admits, and I wanted to know how they did it.They convened for two weeks in the house outside Austin where Cross Record recordedWabi-Sabito see what would happen, recording Joy, the gorgeously ambivalent I Dont Want Children, and the beginnings of five more songs. An album seemed surprisingly imminent. There was something special about the combination of the three of us, Meiburg says, and very different from either of our bands. But I think we were afraid to say so out loud, for fear of jinxing it.This sense of discovery extends to the listener; at times,Lomaalmost seems to be listening toyou. But it doesnt sound small, or hushed; Dark Oscillations and Jornada have a gritty, futuristic grandeur, and theres also the loping groove of Relay Runner, the galloping euphoria of Joy, and the resolutely ambiguous choir of Black Willow. The album is a journey, muses Meiburg, but we didnt know where we were going until we arrived. The journeys end came with a surprising lesson. Its about having to let some precious things go, Meiburg says, so that new ones can take their place.Tickets:www.ticketweb.com/event/the-tractor-presents-loma-w-tractor-tickets/7944065?REFERRAL_ID=twfb... Seattle, WA  98107 Map

$ 10.00 - $12.00 / Age 21 And UpAdditional Info:Lifelong friends and deep-north natives, musical group Michigan Rattlers play heavyhearted folk-rock with an aching dose of Midwestern nice. Graham Young (guitar), Adam Reed (upright bass), and Christian Wilder (piano) began writing music and performing together in their Northern Michigan high school.Petoskey is a small place. Beautiful, but secluded. Its hard to start a musical career in a place where there are more deer than people.Still, they regularly played every bar, cafe, and stage in town, developing a musical chemistry informed by the likes of AC/DC, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Seger, and more. After a few years apart, Reed and Young settled down in Los Angeles, recorded a short demo, and began playing locally. The demo found its way into the hands of super-producer Johnny K (Plain White T's, 3 Doors Down), and they cut the bulk of their first EP at NRG Studios in just one day."My favorite music is recorded that way," continues Reed. "You get in a room, plug in, and cut songs live. The energy of the recording comes directly from the physical performance, and it puts the listener into that specific time and place."This self-titled Michigan Rattlers EP attracted glowing reviews from No Depression, Bluegrass Situation, B3 Science, and Rolling Stone, who named the band one of their Ten New Country Artists You Need To Know in 2016. They spent the rest of that year and much of the next touring in support of this release. In September 2017, Pianist Christian Wilder was added to the bands lineup. Now a trio, the group headed into the studio to record their newest EP, Wasting the Meaning. Comprised of three cover songs, the project was conceived as a way to explore deeper into the recording process and pay homage to some of their favorite songwriters.Currently, the group is hard at work recording their first full-length release. It is slated for release in the summer of 2018.Tickets:www.ticketweb.com/event/tractor-presents-michigan-rattlers-w-sunset-tavern-tickets/8151845?REFERR...... See MoreSee Less
