|Tugboat racing has history in Seattle.|Tugboat races were an annual spectacle on the Seattle waterfront (until cancellation in 2016). They became popular following the success of the movie Tugboat Annie in 1933, which starred the Arthur Foss, which you can visit today at Northwest Seaport in South Lake Union. For many years, races on Elliott Bay featured ARTHUR and many other tugs vying for fastest in their respective size categories. ARTHUR almost always won (max. speed 13 knots). This photo was taken from a press boat in 1940 and shows ARTHUR out front on the right. Should the tug races be resurrected in Seattle? |Haha, no thank you|Seattle's GeekWire reports on the new store conceived Inside Amazon in South Lake Union. Looks great if you love your food packaged in plastic. Overall, setting aside the technological interest, it seems like a lot of trouble and investment to avoid hiring a few cashiers and to keep people out of local restaurants.

|Daffodils and Valentine's Day Just Around the Corner|The first daffodils of the season warm the heart - the ones here were pictured today at The Dunn Gardens north of Ballard. If you have never been to The Dunn Gardens, then add them to your bucket list and check out their Valentine's Dinner in Dunn Gardens ($75) - so romantic and beautiful. Check it!We are not at the host stage yet but the first daffodils of the season surely fills the heart with pleasure and makes it dance.I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud WILLIAM WORDSWORTHI wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils. ... |Romantic Musical Evening with Cast Iron Maidens: Feb 10| Woodland Theater invites you to a musical evening with Annie Ford and Katie Weller together as the Cast Iron Maidens and San Juan Island's John Bellows and Bret Koontz. The Cast Iron Maidens spin long-lost and tales of love and longing from forgotten pages of the early-twentieth-century American songbook, singing in charismatic sister-style harmony and accompanying themselves with expert guitar, fiddle, and saw. The duo’s repertoire, honed on the streets of Seattle in the legendary Pike Place Market, is guaranteed to melt the most solidly frozen hearts.

8:00pm - February 10thWoodland Theater, SeattleWoodland Theater is thrilled to host an evening of beautifully original singers: Annie Ford and Katie Weller together as the Cast Iron Maidens, San Juan Island's John Bellows, and Bret KoontzThe Cast Iron Maidens (Annie Ford and Katie Weller)W spin long-lost and tales of love and longing from forgotten pages of the early-twentieth-century American songbook, singng in charismatic sister-style harmony and accompanying themselves with expert guitar, fiddle, and saw. The duo’s repertoire, honed on the streets of Seattle in the legendary Pike Place Market, is guaranteed to melt the most solidly frozen hearts. Cast Iron Maidens can perform with a full PA in a large venue as easily as they can in unamplified settings.m.facebook.com/gus.clark.12/posts/1029856613728225Annie Ford (Annie Ford Band, Nu Klezmer Army, Slimpickins, Pretty Shady String Band, Eurodanceparty USA) grew up outside a small town in rural Virginia in a log cabin. A brilliant fiddler and multi-instrumentalist, Ford has worked as a studio musician and street performer across the United States for the past twenty years. The timeless, dynamic quality to her playing and singing seems to come at once from the ether and from a deep connection to the inner workings of the heart.KATIE WELLER (God’s Favorite Beefcake)Once a full-time musician, Katie Weller is a seed farmer and goat herder living in northern Vermont. In years past Katie busked on the streets of Seattle, New Orleans, and along the West Coast, and in various venues with circuses accompanying chicken slaughters. She performs with a handful of instruments, focusing mostly on guitar, musical saw, and scratch fiddle. ---JOHN BELLOWSjohnbellows.bandcamp.com/vimeo.com/240486657San Juan Island's John Bellows brings lush arrangements of songs that dive into a maelstrom of introspection and earnest honesty and emerge unscathed. Unsentimental and clear-eyed vignettes that take place on the edge of darkness."Bellows responds to alienation by getting wiser, rather than enhancing his bitterness or sadness, and this wisdom comes across nicely enough to never seem like complaining, even if the song may be ranting against older people, parents, or teachers."-Phil Diamond, Decoder Magazine----BRET KOONTZbretkoontz.bandcamp.com/releasesThese are songs that bloom into a rare balance of darkness and light, truth and entertainment."Close blends of jazz with hints of folk in a poised environment that just surpassed the renaissance, old-school, but pushing it the right way. Like the lines of privacy and secrecy, and exploring the in-between." -c monster, Tiny Mix Tapes

A Day of Remembrance event featuring Gold Star father Khizr Khan and musician Kishi Bashi. **This event is free and open to the public, but all attendees are required to register for complimentary tickets here: denshodor.brownpapertickets.com/During World War II,120,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly incarcerated against their will for the sole “crime” of their Japanese ancestry. Today, American Muslims are being similarly targeted because of their faith. We’ve been here before, and it is our responsibility to ensure that we do not continue down a path that values prejudice and a false sense of security over liberty and justice. On February 19, we will recognize Japanese American service members, survivors, resisters, and upstanders of World War II. And we are honored to welcome guest speaker Khizr Khan whose new memoir, "An American Family," is an intensely personal story about the nature of true patriotism and what it’s like to risk everything you know for the promises contained in the U.S. Constitution. Musician Kishi Bashi will screen a segment of his forthcoming documentary about Japanese American incarceration and will accompany it with a musical performance. Doors will open at 1 p.m. and all attendees will be subjected to a courteous bag screening. We encourage guests to arrive early as your general admission ticket is not guarantee of a seat. Doors will open to non-ticket holders 10 minutes prior to the start of the program.World War II incarceration survivors and Nisei veterans are encouraged to attend and will be honored during the event.
